I decided to start this blog because I want people to know the wisdom of my grandmother, Gertrude. She was wise beyond any formal education could provide. I spent most of my childhood at her side. My mother was a working woman, unheard of in the 1950s, and childcare was not available. Extended families took care of each other.
When I hear wash your hands, I immediately remember all the “lectures” about why washing your hands was so important. I would never come out of the bathroom or come to the table without first a trip to the sink. Well, here we are again! Teaching people to wash your hands.
Here is some other things she did in the name of safety for your heath:
Take your shoes off as soon as you come in the house. Why? “Who knows what you just walked through, and I do not want those germs in the house.”
She would take a cleaning solution and wash all the door handles on a regular basis.
She washed her clothes in scalding hot water. Oh yes, she did shrink some expensive clothing but there were no germs on them.
Cleaning the house was a weekly procedure. The kitchen was cleaned every night after dinner. No dirty dishes left in the sink and the top of the stove was given a good scrub.
Stay tuned for more of Gertrude, she did know best!
