Gertrude and the cows

When I was in third grade my city dwelling, parents decided to move us to a farm in the middle of nowhere. (At least I thought it was) Shortly after they moved they decided to purchase several head of Herford cows, which are the size of a VB beetle car. Everyone had strict instructions never open the gate or the cows would escape. My parents had to go out of town, so my grandmother agreed to stay with me.

I was at school and I started to get harassed about my grandmother not being much of a farmer. It seems that Gertrude did not follow instructions and opened the gate. She was booted to the ground and out went the cows. What to do? Call the fire department! She did and as it turned out many of my classmates’ fathers were volunteer firemen. They managed to round up the cows. I guess Gertrude was not going to tell anyone what she had done but in a small rural community, everyone knows everyone’s business. We all kidded her about what she did and she took it as a good learning experience. Do what you are told!
