As Halloween approaches I remember the costumes Gertrude made for me. I never had one from the store and could not wear a mask, because I could not see.
One year I was an Indian with a red face, thanks to the makeup in Gertrude’s drawer. I was a Chinaman and even a Gypsy. That is when I got to wear so much of her costume jewelry and thought I looked beautiful.
But the best year was when I was a cowgirl. I want to look like Roy Roger’s wife, Dale Evans. I had the hat, boots and gun holster! I got to carry a cap gun with “bullets”. Oh my, what was she thinking?
I was just a kid playing dress up and out to collect candy.
Side note, in Buffalo Halloween was usually a cold, damp night, so I had to cover my costume in a winter coat!
