I must admit that somedays I can and do eat only when I am hungry. (Luckily the man I married understands and will go ahead and eat when he is hungry). But other days, l eat just because. Gertrude had taught me that eating is not the best way to handle emotions. But this pandemic is getting stressful!
I have reverted back to ice cream on days when I have been a “good girl” and life has not been fair. I think most of us have a food that brings back comforting memories.
It is interesting to reflect on the food(s)you turn to when life is not fair. It is not easy work and may bring back memories of some very trying times in your life.
The first step is to try to identify the food(s). Then who made it or gave it to you. What was this person in your life? Friend or family, coworker, ex-partner.
If your parents or grandparents were from another country of origin, look and see what foods are served that are from the “old country”at the holidays. For Gertrude it was cabbage, served many different ways, but at Thanksgiving it was red, sweet and sour cabbage. I can taste it as I write this blog. Power of food is amazing.
Food is so much more than nourishment. The emotion that go with food is incredible. For some it is a sign of love, safety or security.
