Who remembers the house smelling like mothballs every Fall?

Gertrude always put away her summer clothes in early fall and then place her winter cloths in her very small closet. The house was built when people had fewer clothes and shoes. (I remember trying to play hide and seek in that closet and I barely fit as a kid.) She kept the winter clothes in the attic in a box with mothballs. When the winter clothes were needed they had to be aired out for a few days. As a kid my nose knew when they were being aired out because the whole house smelled of naphthalene, a very toxic, flammable substance. It was banned in 2008 and now mothballs contain dichlorobenzene. I am not sure if I want my clothes in a benzene derivative.

.

Yesterday it actually turned cold in South Carolina, so I had to find my sweaters. Luckily, I use cedar chips to keep away the moths. The smell is much nicer. I do not have very many winter clothes since winter here may last only a few weeks. They are projecting that the weather on Christmas will be back in the 70’s.
